First, What Is Gua Sha, Anyway?
Gua sha (pronounced "gwah shah") comes from traditional Chinese medicine — it literally means "to scrape." On the body, it's used to relieve muscle pain and tension. Facial gua sha is much gentler — it's less "scraping" and more "gliding."
The idea is to stimulate lymphatic drainage and circulation. The lymphatic system relies on body movement to push fluid around. If you're sedentary — like most of us — lymph flow can get sluggish. Facial gua sha gives it a gentle nudge.
What Happened Over Those Two Weeks
Week one: my skin reacted. For the first few days, I broke out in a few tiny bumps. The person who taught me said it's normal — "like stirring up sediment at the bottom of a lake." Lymph is moving, waste is being carried out. She told me not to stop, just keep going.
Week two: I started to know my face. This was the most unexpected benefit. As I glided the stone across my cheekbones, jawline, and forehead, I could feel exactly where I was tight and tense. I'd never realized how much I unconsciously held tension in my face — especially around the jaw and cheekbones.
Taking a few minutes each day to do this, you gradually learn what your face normally feels like.
The results?
Morning puffiness noticeably reduced. My face used to be slightly swollen when I woke up — after gua sha, my contours looked more defined. My skin also had a subtle glow. Not dramatic, but definitely a "brighter" look.
One unexpected win: it's great for jaw tension. If you clench your teeth at night or unconsciously hold tension in your jaw during the day, gliding the stone along your jawline is incredibly releasing.
How to Start
If you want to try it, remember three things:
First, always use oil or serum.Never glide on dry skin — it pulls at the skin. Apply a layer of facial oil or serum so the stone glides smoothly.
Second, direction matters.Start from your neck, always moving outward and upward — following the natural direction of lymphatic flow. Repeat each stroke 3–5 times, and keep the pressure light.
Third, avoid the eye area. The skin around your eyes is too thin for gua sha. But if your eyes are puffy in the morning, pop the stone in the fridge for a few minutes, then gently press it around your eyes — the coolness feels lovely.
BOLAN Relax Care offers natural jade gua sha boards with a smooth, rounded edge, perfect for gentle facial sculpting. Pair it with a face roller — morning de-puffing, evening relaxation — they work beautifully together.
It's not a miracle cure. But it did make me spend three extra minutes each day actually feeling my face.
